FARMINGDALE, NY - Iona Men's Golf team battled the weather, dealing with a one hour rain delay at Bethpage state park on Long Island. The Gaels teed off the red course, playing at 7,092 yards and a par 70. Participating in the Doc Gimmler hosted by St. John's University for the third year in a row and sixth time in the past eight years. The Doc Gimmler is a 54-hole event with two rounds played yesterday and the final 18 holes played today.
The five golfers for the Maroon & Gold that hit the course were Fletcher Wunderlich, Zach Baldwin, Parker Smith, and two new Gaels
Michael Sosik &
Sahir Balyan. Other schools competing in the Doc Gimmler include; Columbia, Harvard, Lafayette, Georgetown, LMU, LIU, Lehigh, FDU, Rider, Towson, Niagara, Fairfield, and Hofstra. Iona tied FDU at 21-over as a team, while the Columbia program took first place at 26-under.
Fletcher Wunderlich finished as the Gaels top individual finisher as the Gaels lone eagle of the day on 16 helped him card a strong even par round. Both Baldwin and Sosik carded a 73 just as they did in the first round. Park Smith carded a six-over 76, his lone bird of the day came on the par five 5th hole. Sahir Balyan started off with five straight pars on his way to a seven over 77.
The Maroon & Gold's next event will be across the pond as they compete in the annual 2023 Iona-UCD Challenger's Cup. This year it will be hosted by the University College Dublin in Dublin, Ireland.
