DANBURY, Conn.— The Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) announced its 2024 Division I Men's Soccer All-ECAC Teams and major awards on Monday afternoon. The Iona University men's soccer team was represented on the All-ECAC First team by senior
Tim Timchenko and junior
Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez and along with senior
Thiago Cagna on the All-ECAC Second Team.
Timchenko collected All-ECAC First Team honors for the second straight season in addition to MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and All-MAAC First Team accolades during his impressive 2024 season. The senior center-back is not just the captain of the Gaels, but the heart of a strong defense. Timchenko helped the Gaels earn seven shutouts on the year and played all but 15 minutes this season. Against league opponents, He and the Iona defense surrendered just six goals through 11 games and tallied six shutouts.
Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez
Gonzalez Fernandez earns All-ECAC First Team honors for his dominate goal scoring season. He adds this accolade to go with his All-MAAC First Team accolade. Gonzalez Fernandez led the Gaels in goals with nine and that was good enough to put him second in the MAAC. The Senior from Madrid, Spain played in 18 matches for the Gaels this year and was the focal point in all Gaels attacks from his midfield position. He also led the Gaels with 21 points and that too was good enough for second in the MAAC.
THiago Cagna
Cagna picks up All-ECAC Second Team honors to go with his All-MAAC First Team accolades this season. Cagna followed up his breakout year with an even better season, being named to back-to-back All-MAAC First Teams. He led the team with ten assists and was second in the MAAC. The Senior from Buenos Aires, Argentina played in all 19 games this season and dominated the midfield for the Gaels to control possession in almost all of their matches.
