Iona Women's Rowing Varsity 8 Wins Dad Vail Petite Final

PENNSAUKEN, NJ - The Iona University women's rowing team advanced to the varsity 8 petite final on the final day of the 2024 Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta on the Cooper River in South Jersey.

THE RUNDOWN

The Gaels finished fourth in its semifinal heat with a time of 7:37.53, falling just shy of the grand final. Drexel, Embry-Riddle and Loyola Maryland finished ahead of Iona in the second heat of the semifinal round.

"We were frustrated about not making the grand final," said junior Grace Barber. "But one thing Iona knows how to do is make a comeback."

The crew crossed first in its final with a time of 7:22.8, ahead of Bryant with a 7:41.6 finish, and Delaware with an 8:28.8 finish.

"Absolutely electric, from wire to wire," said Director of Men's and Women's Rowing, Ben MacDougald.

"When push comes to shove, the eight of us know how to get it done," says junior Layne McDonald, stroke seat.

THE LINEUP

Iona's Varsity 8 crew consisted of junior coxswain Cara Donnelly and McDonald, Barber and junior classmates Emma Ibbetson and Kaeli Dean, sophomores Mackenna Agosti and Clare Robertsen, senior Abigail Kokiadis, and junior Grace Mutze.
