NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Iona University men's lacrosse head coach
Chad Surman announced the hiring of Peter Dolan and Gerard Kane as assistant coaches ahead of the 2026 season. The duo brings a balance of high-level coaching experience and fresh energy to a growing Gaels program.
"I'm incredibly excited to welcome Peter and Gerard to our staff," said Surman. "They each bring a deep love for the game and unique strengths that complement our vision. Peter has developed talent at the highest levels of Division I and internationally, while Gerard is a rising coaching mind with a tireless work ethic and a passion that's contagious. Together, they'll help us continue to elevate Iona Lacrosse."
Peter Dolan
Dolan joins the Gaels following a stint on the staff at High Point University, where he helped shape a young program's foundation under head coach John Crawley. He previously spent four seasons at Rutgers University, helping the Scarlet Knights to a 2022 NCAA Final Four and 2021 Quarterfinals appearance while developing multiple All-Americans and top-tier specialists. His coaching resume includes over a decade of experience at the collegiate, club, and international levels, most notably with Ireland Lacrosse, where he helped lead the U20 national team to a European Championship in 2024.
Â
"Peter is an extremely passionate and dedicated coach who has had success at every stop in his coaching journey thus far," said Surman. "He's coached at the highest levels, developed elite talent across multiple positions, and brings a sharp mind for film, scouting, and operations. Our program benefits immediately with him on board."
Gerard Kane
A 2025 graduate of Hofstra University, Kane makes the transition from player to coach after a standout Division I career, including a CAA All-Rookie Team selection in 2022. The Atlanta native has spent years coaching youth and club lacrosse with organizations like 3d Georgia and Georgia Tigers, designing development plans, running team practices, and mentoring athletes across all skill levels. His passion for coaching was ignited early, having worked with some of the sport's top minds and players through family-run camps and personal training opportunities.
Â
"Gerard has all the tools to be a great coach," said Surman. "His energy, attention to detail, and genuine care for his players set him apart. He's a student of the game and someone our athletes will immediately connect with."
IONA MEN'S LACROSSE
Iona men's lacrosse completed its inaugural campaign in 2025 under coach Surman. The Gaels earned wins over Hampton and MAAC-rival Quinnipiac with a squad consisting of entirely freshmen student-athletes. Surman, Dolan and Kane will be joined on the sidelines in 2025-26 by second-year assistant coach and offensive coordinator
Brendan Kavanagh.
