Iona Swim & Dive Men Fourth. Women Seventh at Day 2 of MAAC S&D Champs

Nicholas Patino Wins Gold, :20.02 in the 50 free.

GENEVA, OH - The second day of competition ended with the Iona men in fourth place and the women's team in seventh place, highlighted by two dozen season-best efforts, one gold medal, one bronze medal, and a costly relay disqualification. The Iona gold came from the fast arms and legs of junior Nick Patino, who touched the wall in 20.02 in the 50-yard freestyle for an Iona record. Only .42 separated the field of eight, including teammates Kieran Egan at 20.30 and Nate Wales at 20.57, who finished sixth and seventh, respectively.

Diving coach Maureen Arnold's men had a strong night on the 3-meter springboard, with sophomore Joel Picard taking bronze, senior Dylan Riccio placing seventh, and sophomore Neil Senhouse finishing tenth.

The final event of the night brought the crowd to its feet as Egan, Patino, Harry Platt, and Nate Wales led wire to wire in the 200-yard freestyle relay, finishing in 1:19.58 — a time that would have been both a meet and Iona record — only to see an early takeoff exchange violation result in a disqualification.

Coach Nick Cavataro commented, "We want aggressive exchanges, but the poolside officials saw the violation and it stands, despite my protest."

In the men's team standings, Fairfield leads with 473.5 points, followed by Marist and Niagara tied at 397. Iona stands fourth at 342, with Rider at 310.5.

The lone Iona woman to make a championship final was Raegan O'Brien, who posted a career-best 2:05.18 to place fifth in the 200-yard individual medley. Freshman Sydney Cronin had the team's fastest IM swim of the day at 2:05.09, winning the consolation final for ninth, while senior Brennyn Veit finished 16th in 2:07.34.

Other women competing in the evening finals included 500-yard swimmers Anabel Hufftsutler, 12th at 5:02.33; Maddie Lauria, 23rd at 5:13.99; and Katherine Sarnes, 24th at 5:15.21. On the men's side in the 500-yard freestyle, Matthew Woyksnar finished 10th at 4:34.64; Platt was 12th at 4:37.23; and Robert Heim placed 17th at 4:36.59.

In the men's 200-yard individual medley, Noah Giunta took 12th at 1:50.35, with Max Buchen finishing 16th at 1:52.36. In the women's 50-yard freestyle, Victoria Mordaunt placed 15th at 24.19, with Mary Grace Waring 22nd at 24.36.

The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of Mordaunt, Nia Thomas, Paige Fiorino, and Mary Grace Waring closed the night's scoring with a seventh-place finish in 1:36.18. In the women's team standings, Marist leads with 457 points, followed by Niagara (412), Sacred Heart (366), Fairfield (358), Rider and Mount St. Mary's (248), and Iona at 246.

The meet resumes Friday with the 100-yard butterfly, 400-yard individual medley, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, and women's 3-meter diving.
