DESTASIO'S LATE GOAL HELPS GAELS FORGE TIE WITH NO. 12 FORDHAM

Bronx, NY - Freshman forward Giovanni Destasio's second collegiate goal in the 79th minute tied the score as the Iona College men's soccer team forged a 1-1 tie with No. 12 Fordham at Jack Coffey Field this evening. The Gaels (2-3-3) out shot the Rams (5-0-2) 15-11 in the contest.

The Rams were first to score, as Ryan Brown grabbed a loose ball and netted a low shot from twenty yards out in the in the 33rd minute. The Gaels continued to press but couldn't find the back of the net until the rookie Destasio knocked a long ball into the box to beat the keeper on the ground in the final minute of regulation play. Destasio's goal was assisted by sophomore Ben Williams and forced the game into overtime.

Neither team was able to score in two overtime periods, and both would exit with a draw. Each team had a chance in overtime with the Gaels collecting two shots in the first overtime and Fordham getting a chance in the second overtime that was saved by Gael goalkeeper Nils Binstock. Binstock made six saves as his counterpart, Doug Deveraux, stopped four.

Fordham entered the game ranked No. 12 in the latest Division I NSCAA/adidas Coaches' Poll and No. 1 in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

The Gaels look to even their record on Saturday as they take on Mount St. Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD.
