Hamden, CT - Sophomore Fernando Liserra scored the game-winning goal in the Iona College men's soccer team's 1-0 victory over Quinnipiac in the regular season finale. The Gaels improve to 8-9-2 overall heading into the MAAC Championships.
While neither team was able to score during regulation play, the Maroon & Gold held the upper hand through much of the match. The Gaels led with 19 shots to the Bobcats' seven, including a 7-0 margin in shots on goal. Iona also held a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
Just over two minutes into the overtime period, Liserra was able to beat Quinnipiac goalkeeper Freddy Hall with a dart into the lower right corner of the net. Paul Racines and Aleksander Haxhari assisted on Liserra's second goal of the season.
This year's MAAC Championship will be held at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, FL. Entering the tournament seeded fifth, Iona will face fourth seeded Canisius in the quarterfinal round on Nov. 15 at 1:30 pm.
