Bronx, NY- A nine run second inning sparked a 15-4 win for Fordham over the Iona College baseball team in non-conference baseball action at Houlihan Park. The Gaels (9-25) have lost 11 straight.
The Maroon & Gold took a 1-0 lead after the top of the first when rookie 2B
Mike Walraven scored on an RBI single by sophomore C
Andrew Wernicki. Walraven reached on a single of his own, escaped being picked off first base when Fordham pitcher Andrew Davis threw the ball away and then advanced to third on wild pitch.
Walraven scored his second of three runs in the game in the top of the eighth inning on a hard hit single up the middle by junior 2B
Ralph Marzella. He reached base to lead off the inning on an infield single in the hole at shortstop. Senior 3B
AJ Dederick beat out a double play and picked up an RBI on the fielder's choice on the next batter to account for Iona's third run.
Rookie 1B
Andrew Passerelle was credited with an RBI ninth as he was hit by a pitch to drive in the run with the bases loaded.
Outside of the bottom of the second, starter
Dylan McCullough (0-3) had an encouraging outing tossing scoreless innings and never really being in trouble in the other four innings. Senior RHP
Nick Capowski tossed three innings in relief.
Walraven was 2-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored in the loss. Marzella and Passerelle also collected two hits and an RBI.
Fordham C Chris Kaible did the most damage with a 3-for-4 effort and two runs scored. He drove in all four RBI on a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth.
Davis (2-2) picked up the win.
The Gaels are back in action tomorrow afternoon returning to Salesian Field for a non-conference matchup with Wagner that is slated to begin at 3:00 pm.
