New Rochelle, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team scored once in each half against Drexel to beat the Dragons 2-0 at Mazzella Field. The victory was Iona's fifth in row and the team's fourth by shutout this season. The Gaels improved to 5-2-0 while the Dragons are now 2-3-2.
The Maroon & Gold posted its first tally of the day in the 19th minute on Aly Lo's third goal of 2008. Alexander Paszek provided the feed about 20 yards from the front left corner of the net to record his second assist this year.
Iona's defense was able to keep Drexel off the scoreboard, keeping the game at 1-0 for the remainder of the first half and well into the second. With seven minutes and change left to go in the contest, Giovanni Destasio found the back of the net to increase the Gaels' lead to 2-0. Adam Rohan knocked a pass to Destasio, who dribbled around an opposing defender and successfully placed a shot past Dragon goalkeeper Cory Robertson.
Robertson had three saves on the day while Iona netminder Nils Binstock made four saves and earned his third shutout of the season. The Gaels held a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks but trailed slightly, 8-7, in shots.
Iona returns to action on Sep. 27 when the squad faces NJIT on the road. The game will be played at 7:00 pm.
