Newark, NJ - Senior F
Aly Lo put the Gaels on the board in the 18th minute and classmate
Ben Williams added an insurance goal on a penalty kick in the 41st minute to lead the Iona College men's soccer team to its sixth straight victory. The Gaels (6-2) have rattled off shutouts in three straight and five of their last six contests.
Lo posted his unassisted game winner at the 17:55 mark - it was his fourth of the season. His low shot from about 22 yards out was deflected off of an NJIT defender. The ball changed direction just enough to put the Highlander goalkeeper in an awkward position to try for the save.
After
Mario Rios was tripped up in the penalty box, Williams also found the back of the net for the fourth time this season on the ensuing penalty kick at 40:26.
That was all the Gaels needed as goalkeeper
Nils Binstock extended his shutout streak to 303:37 while stopping both shots on goal that he faced. It was his ninth career shutout and fourth of the season. He now stands one shy of matching his own school record, one he shares with former Iona keeper Patrick McAllen.
The Gaels open up MAAC play next Friday afternoon when they host Fairfield at Mazzella Field at 3:00 pm.
