PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Iona College men's soccer team played its third straight overtime game, this time defeating Drexel by a score of 2-1. Senior
Fernando Liserra led the Gaels (4-1-2) with three points in the win.
The Dragons (4-3-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute after Mike Crosse chipped the ball over the head of Iona goalkeeper
Nils Binstock off a pass from Ben Miller. Iona pulled even later in the half, with Liserra scoring on a free kick from 40 yards out on the right side. The game remained knotted at 1-1 for the rest of regulation to send it into extra minutes.
The Gaels wasted no time putting the game away in the first overtime period as
Giovanni Destasio netted the game-winner with less than one minute erased from the clock. Starting on the left side of the field, Liserra took a free kick that was then headed back across by
Julian Grajales and finally finished off by Destasio.
Binstock finished with four saves to get his fourth win of the year while Drexel's Tres Heffron saved five.
Earlier in the day Iona earned the No. 2 spot in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America's North Atlantic
regional poll for the second time this season. The squad returns to action on Sep. 26, playing a 7:00 pm match at Sacred Heart.
