NEW ROCHELLE, NY - In their final unofficial match before the start of the 2010 season, the Iona College men's soccer team hosted local opponent Fordham at Mazzella Field. Neither side was able to put a mark on the scoreboard as the Gaels and Rams played to a 0-0 tie.
In a scoreless first half,
Samuel Adjei had a couple of threatening shots for the Gaels, including one in the 23rd minute. Adjei arced a shot from the left side that was just within reach of Fordham goalie Ryan Meara, who got a hand on the ball at the top of the net to deflect it over the crossbar.
Second-year transfer goalkeeper
Jesse Fullerton had an impressive showing in front of the net, making three key saves in the game to keep Iona in contention. In the second half, Fullerton made a great stop on a 75th minute penalty kick attempt by Nathaniel Bekoe and later scrambled to cover up a ball on the ground at Bekoe's feet just off the right corner of the box.
Meara also had three saves for Fordham, stopping shots by Adjei,
Victor Munoz, and
Franklin Castellanos. Iona begins its season with a mid-week contest at home against Hartwick on Sep. 1.
