LONG ISLAND DEALS IONA 3-0 DEFEAT

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College women's soccer team continued its non-league schedule with a Monday afternoon home contest against Long Island.  The Gaels (2-8) surrendered one goal in the first half and two more in the second en route to a 3-0 defeat.

The Blackbirds (6-1-1) were led offensively by forward Toni Smith's three points.  Smith registered the first goal of the afternoon in the 13th minute to give Long Island a 1-0 first period lead and went on to assist in Kayleigh Morgan's 58th minute tally.  Jessica Roelant closed out the scoring in the 78th minute, finding the back of the net off a feed from Katie Egan.

Seniors Abby Dixon and Diane Hare each recorded a shot on goal for Iona, who totaled seven attempts in the contest.  Goalkeeper Trista Rivera, the current MAAC Defensive Player of the Week, made eight saves over the 90 minutes while Jennifer Bannon saved two for Long Island.  The Gaels held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.

The Maroon & Gold will wrap up its non-conference slate this weekend, playing at Bucknell in a 4:00 pm match-up on Sep. 26.
