NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team saw it's one-goal lead quickly erased as Hofstra came back with two of its own in a 2-1 loss to the Pride at Mazzella Field. The defeat evened the Gaels' record to 1-1 to start the year while Hofstra improved to 1-1.
In a game that looked as though just one goal would win it, Iona pulled out to a 1-0 advantage on sophomore
Douglas Stephens' second tally of the season. Stephens booted a shot past Pride goalkeeper Greg Cumpstone in the 71st minute off a feed from rookie
Samuel Adjei. The lead was short lived, however, as Hofstra quickly matched to even the score two minutes later. Mike Annarumma picked up the equalizer with his first career goal on an unassisted shot.
Hofstra then scored the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute as Brett Carrington got help from Florian Pop to net the game winner. Iona got one more chance to tie in the final minute as Adjei got to a bouncing ball in the box with 25 seconds to play. Adjei's attempt was warded off with a routine save by Cumpstone to preserve the win for Hofstra.
Iona led 13-9 in shots, including a 5-2 edge in the scoreless first half, and outnumbered the Pride 7-4 in shots on goal. The Gaels also held a commanding 9-2 lead in corner kicks.
Jesse Fullerton had two saves in the defeat.
The Gaels have a ten day break from competition before returning to action at Adelphi on Sep. 14.
