HAMILTON, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team suffered their fifth straight loss Thursday afternoon, dropping a 75-50 decision to Colgate at Cotterel Court.
After two quick baskets by the Gaels opened up an early 4-0 lead, Colgate responded with a 12-0 run and led for the duration of the contest. Colgate, whose 75 points were a season high, shot an impressive 53% from the field, as well as 7-for-11 from behind the arc in the first half, took a 46-18 advantage into the locker room at the half. The Gaels, meanwhile, struggled to find their shot in the first 20 minutes, shooting 23% from the field.
"I was very disappointed in our lack of intensity to start the game," said head coach
Anthony Bozzella. "It carried throughout the first half and put us in a deep hole."
The Gaels showed heart in the second half, outscoring Colgate 32-29, but it was too little too late. Freshman
Aleesha Powell led the Gaels with 12 points and a season-high six steals. Freshman
Damika Martinez added nine points and three rebounds. Sophomore guard
Jackie Marshall had nine points and four rebounds while senior
Tomica Bacic and sophomore
Sabrina Jeridore had eight rebounds each.
The Raiders had five players in double digits, with freshman Mariah Jones leading the way with 15 points and five rebounds.
"We are going to move on, work hard in practice, put this game behind us, and get ready for conference play," commented Bozzella.
The Gaels open up their MAAC schedule on Monday as they take on Fairfield on the road at 7:00 pm.
