HEMPSTEAD, NY - The Iona College men's soccer team won its 2011 season opener with a 2-0 victory at Hofstra. The Gaels banked on goals by
Samuel Adjei and
Adam Rohan, while
Franklin Castellanos earned two assists.
Iona's first tally of the year came in the 25th minute to give the squad a 1-0 edge. Castellanos sent a long through ball in to Adjei, who dropped it into the back of the net for his sixth career goal. The Gaels outshot the Pride 9-3 in the first half to head into the break up by one.
Rohan, a senior captain, gave his team an insurance goal in the 79th minute. Castellanos and Adjei worked a set of passes off a short Gael corner kick, then Castellanos crossed the ball to Rohan for a header in front of the net.
Iona has now won its season opener in three consecutive years. Freshman goalkeeper
Borja Barbero made one save to earn his first career victory. Hofstra's Roberto Pellegrini had three saves.
The Maroon & Gold continues its five game road set at New Hampshire on Sep. 1.
