Mike Ritz is currently a junior journalism major at Iona College. He is from Yorktown, New York and is a sports writer for the school newspaper, The Ionian. Mike has been the manager for the Iona women's basketball team since his freshman year. A lover of sports, he played four years of basketball in high school as well as four years of golf. Mike comes from an Iona family, both of his parents, Ron and Michelle, graduated from Iona as well as his sister, Jen, who played basketball for the Gaels for four years and graduated in 2008. Mike loves to be a part of the Iona family and aspires to be a successful sports writer when he graduates.
LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Iona College women's basketball team dropped its their straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon with an 83-59 loss to Siena at UHY Court at the Alumni Rec. Center.
An early three pointer by freshman
Damika Martinez gave the Gaels an early 3-2 lead in what would be the lone Iona lead of the contest. A layup by Siena's Kelsey Booth with 7:27 remaining in the first half started the Saints on a 13-1 run, pushing Siena's lead to 36-19. A jumper by Martinez as time expired in the first cut the Siena lead to 45-31 at the half, a half in which Siena shot a torried 55% from the field.
In the second half, the Gaels would only be able to cut the Siena lead to 12, but Siena would capitalize on Iona's mistakes until the final horn, scoring 20 points off 14 Iona turnovers. Siena also got to the free throw line with more consistently than the Gaels, picking up 20 points at the charity stripe.
Senior
Tomica Bacic led the Gaels with 18 points and 10 rebounds, with Martinez finishing with 15 points and six boards. Maja Gerlyng led Siena with a career high 21 points, while Lily Grenci had 20 points and 10 rebounds.
The Gaels look to bounce back Friday, when they travel to Baltimore to take on Loyola at 4:00 pm.
