NEW HAVEN, CT - Despite scoring a late goal in the second half, the Iona College women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to Yale on Friday evening at Reese Stadium.
Iona (2-4-1) tied the contest in the 87th minute off a rebound by junior
Sofia Sanchez. Just like the game-winner against Saint Joseph's last weekend, the Gaels offense crashed the net after the original shot by sophomore
Samantha Fiorenzo was stopped by Yale's second half goalie Elise Wilcox.
"The result obviously didn't go our way tonight, but I couldn't be more proud of how we competed throughout the match," said head coach
Mike Barroqueiro. "Hats off to Yale, they are a talented team and did well against our pressure; but for our girls to continue to fight throughout the match and get another late goal says alot about the character of this team. There's a ton we can take from this."
Yale (4-3) scored the first tally in the 20th minute off a headed rebound from a free kick. Melissa Galvin's free marker was saved by junior
Trista Rivera, but Trish Berkanish headed away the ball from the Iona goalkeeper.
Iona's only first half shot came with 20 seconds remaining in the half by junior
Nicole Paulucci. The shot was the only save made by Yale starting goalie Rachel Ames.
The Bulldogs scored the game-winner 1:48 into overtime when Kristen Forster took possession and scored after Rivera made an initial stop on Meredith Speck's shot.
Rivera made eight stops in a valiant effort for Iona and Wilcox made two saves on shots from junior
Carly Haden and sophomore
Sali Ayinde in the second half. Ames returned in overtime to secure the victory for the Bulldogs.
Yale finished the contest with a 15-5 advantage in shots and a 10-4 edge in shots on target. The Bulldogs also capitalized on set pieces from the lines finishing with eight corner kicks.
The Gaels will remain on the road and will cross the George Washington Bridge for a Sunday evening match with NJIT at 7 p.m.
