NEW ORLEANS, LA - The Iona College men's cross country team jumped 10 spots to No. 8 in the Oct. 22 release of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association national poll announced this morning. The Gaels bump in the poll was a result of a third place finish at the 2013 Pre-National Invitational, hosted by Indiana State University.
The Gaels finished behind current No. 1 Colorado and No. 4 Oregon and ahead of No. 11 Tulsa, No. 13 Stanford, No. 15 Princeton, No. 20 Boise State, No. 27 Oklahoma and No. 30 Southern Utah. No. 2 Oklahoma State's "B" squad also finished after Iona.
Senior Daniel Clorley was Iona's top finisher, finishing 10th overall with an 8k time of 23:41.13. Redshirt freshman Kieran Clements was 18th (23:49.26) and senior Matthew Gillespie was 21st (23:51.51) as the Gaels' Top 25 competitors.
Sophomore Ethan Heywood was Iona's fourth scorer in 36th place (24:04.77) while junior Andrew Kowalsky came in 41st (24:08.37).
Iona's next in action on Nov. 1 when they look to extend the nation's longest conference title streak at the 2013 MAAC Championship at Van Cortlandt Park. The Maroon & Gold has won 22 straight dating back to 1991.
