Korir Finishes 13th at IAAF World Championships 10,000 Meter

LONDON - The 2017 IAAF World Championships in London kicked off today with eight events on the schedule. The lone final of the day as well as the final race of the evening marked a 13th place showing and personal best by Iona College alum Leonard Korir in the men's 10,000 meter.

Korir posted a new personal record of 27:20.18 to finish 13th among the 27 finishers from multiple nations. The event start with 29 entrants as two individuals did not finish. Mohamed Farah represented his home country of Great Britain by claiming first place with a world leading time of 26:49.51. He narrowly edged out a 26:49.94 time from Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei of Uganda. Korir was one of nine runners to set a personal best within the race.

The 27:20.18 clocking from Korir surpassed a personal best of 27:21.09 from Uganda's Timothy Toroitich. USA teammate Shadrack Kipchirchir landed in ninth place with a personal best time of 27:07.55.

The next Gael representative at the World Championships will be Rosie Clark on Wednesday, August 9 at 2:05 pm Eastern Time. Clarke is scheduled to participate in the round of heats for the 3,000 meter steeplechase for Great Britain.
