MANAGUA, NICARAGUA – Iona College men's track & field rising junior Gerom Solis has been selected to compete for Honduras in the 2018 Central American Championships. Solis will be competing in the 100- and 200-meter sprint events beginning Friday, June 22.
The governing body of the event is the Central American Isthmus Athletic Confederation (CADICA) and consists of seven member federations; Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The championships are being held in Nicaragua as part of a rotation throughout the Central American region. It was last in Managua in 2013.
Solis is competing in his two primary events. He placed sixth in the 100-meters (11.02) and fifth in the 200-meters (22.53) at the 2018 MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Additional top-five finishes in the 200 came at the Yale Springtime (22.62) and Stony Brook (22.66) invitationals
Solis joins an international racing tradition of the Iona College cross country/track & field program. Leonard Korir '12, representing the United States, competed in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games and 2017 IAAF World Championships in London, England. On the women's side, Rosie Clarke '15 and Heidi Gregson '12 also competed in the 2017 IAAF World Championships for Great Britain and Australia respectively. Germany's Maya Rehberg and Denmark's Anna Holm Baumeister each tested themselves at Rio 2016. Katie Avery joined Rosie Clarke to represent Great Britain at the 2016 European Athletics Championships in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Current student-athletes Liam Dee, Jack O'Leary, Sophie Murphy and Egle Morenaite have all competed at European Championships at the junior level. Ehab El-Sandali has shown success for Canada at the world juniors.
