Men's Swimming & Diving Jack Ravitz

Men’s and Women’s Swimming Collect Home Wins Against Southern Connecticut

NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Sparked by a pair of strong performances in the first two individual events, The Iona College men's and women's swim team, went on to capture all but one of the 28 swimming events in an impressive win today at the Hynes Pool over Southern Connecticut State University.

The Iona men raise their record to 5-2 with the 197-93 win. The Iona women moved to 6-2 with their 193-95 win.

Meet Summary

After taking the opening 200-yard Medley Relay races with Grace Curry, Megan Josephs, Ashley Benkert and Katherine Lee combining to win at 1:51.89. The men's quartet of Spencer Moran, Emil Bajramovic, Conor Mullin and Aidan Holbrook won at 1:34.95.
 
However, it was the 1650-Freestyle event, being competed in by the Gaels for the first time this season that gained the most attention. Junior Isabella Nicholson in her first "mile" ever at 17:51.89, which ranks her eighth in Iona history.
 
For the men's, Sophomore Michael Faughnan, also swimming his first "mile" ever took down the 2018 school record held by Christian Foti of 15:40.23, with a time of 15:37.45, which ranks him 20th in the nation as of today.
 
"Both Isabella and Michael are having great years, and to see them test themselves and come out with positive results, is a testament to the excellent training over the last few months," noted Coach Nick Cavataro.
 
Nicholson also took the top spots in the 100-Breatstroke (1:07.88) and the 100-Free (53.46). Faughnan, won the 100-Free (47.68) to stay undefeated this season in individual races.
 
Other winners on the women's side included, Ashley Benkert, who took the 100-Butterfly for her first collegiate win at 1:00.20; Grace Curry 100-Back (1:00.95); Katherine Lee in the50-Free (24.74); Isabelle Pabon, claimed the 200-Free (2:00.92) and the 200-Individual Medley (2:14.02); Meghan Pattison won the 200-Back with a season best time (2:09.58); Taylor Spillman won the 200-Butterfly (2:11.12) and Tristan Urso took the 200-Breaststroke (2:32.32).
 
On the men's side Emil Bajramovic won both the 100 and 200-Breaststroke events with respective time of 58.34 and 2:12.98; Jake DeMartino came from behind to win the 200-Butterfly with a season best at 1:57.80; Daniel Hadary won the 200-Free and Backstroke at 1:44.51 and 1:56.89= respectively.
 
Jackson Madonia touched first in the 200-Individual Medley (1:59.15). Spencer Moran won the 100-Back and 500-Free at 51.83 and 4:50.28, respectively. Conor Mullin took the 50-Free (21.75) and the 100-Butterfly (50.30).
 
"We had a great week of practice and the team is excited for the mid-year Invitational on Dec. 3-4 at Loyola," noted Cavataro.

The Gaels return to the pool on December 3rd, when both the men's and women's team participate in the 2021 Loyola Maryland Invitational.
