BOSTON, MA - Iona College men's indoor track senior
Ehab El-Sandali led quintet of Gael performers at the Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener on Saturday at the BU Track & Tennis Center.
THE RUNDOWN:
In the first indoor event of the 2021-22 campaign, El-Sandali ran the second-fastest indoor 5,000-meter time in Iona history with a 13:28.79. He finished 11th overall in a race that saw a mix of college and pro-athletes. With several indoor opening meets happening across the country, the Top 14 times in the NCAA this weekend competed at Boston University. El-Sandali's time ranks eighth fastest in the NCAA.
At Iona, the time ranks second behind Leonard Korir, a former NCAA Champion and U.S. Olympian. Korir ran a 13:19.54 at the Millrose Games in February 2012. He won the 5k indoor NCAA championship in March 2011 and competed for Team USA in the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.
Sophomore
Jonathan DeSouza ran a personal best time in the 5k, with a 13:54.53. He was sixth in his heat and 34th overall. There were seven sections of the 5k event and 110 competitors. The Gaels also had solid performances from sophomore
Campbell Lee (14:25.19) and freshman
Max Davies (14:59.17).
Sophomore
Nick Soldevere ran a strong 3,000-meter race in his season-debut, finishing 10
th of 69 finishers in 8:09.57.
UP NEXT:
The Gaels will be back in action after the holiday break on January 15 at the Penn 8 Team Select at Ocean Breeze.
