Banegas, Meixner & Thomas Named All-MAAC, 11 Earn All-Academic Status

EDISON, NJ - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced the 2022 Women's Soccer All-MAAC and All-Academic Teams on Monday morning. The Maroon & Gold are represented by Kayla Thomas and Mackenzie Meixner on the All-MAAC Second Team, Sofia Banegas on the All-MAAC Third Team and 11 Gaels on the MAAC All-Academic Team.

For the second consecutive season, and the third time in head coach Todd Plourde's four-year tenure, the Gaels had multiple student-athletes recognized on an All-MAAC Team.

SOFIA BANEGAS

In her second season donning the Maroon & Gold, Banegas took a huge step forward for Iona. The Wantagh, New York native finished the season with six points, tied for third-most on the team. Banegas started all 19 matches for the Gaels.

Banegas scored the first goal of her collegiate career in Iona's 3-1 win over St. Francis Brooklyn in August. The best stretch of her season saw the sophomore register points in three consecutive matches with assists against Army and Saint Peter's, and a goal in Iona's win over Mount St. Mary's.

MACKENZIE MEIXNER

Meixner was tabbed All-MAAC Second Team, appearing on an all-conference squad for the second straight season. The graduate student from Middlesex, New Jersey played in and started all but one match for the Maroon & Gold.

Defensively, Meixner was an integral part of five Iona clean sheets, three of which were victories for the Gaels. On the offensive end, she assisted on a pair of goals, one of which was Sofia Giamanco's game-winner over Quinnipiac on homecoming weekend. Meixner played all 90 minutes in 11 of the 18 matches she appeared in.

KAYLA THOMAS

For the first time in her career, Thomas was recognized on an All-MAAC team. The junior midfielder played in and started all 19 matches for Iona, posting career-best marks offensively. She scored three times in 2022, finishing tied for third on the team with her six total points.

Thomas registered the first goal of her season in Iona's win over VMI, tallying the opening score at Mazzella Field. She then notched goals in back-to-back matches, finding the back of the net against Army and Saint Peter's. Thomas also played an important role defensively in Iona's five shutouts.
