STANFORD, CA - Iona College's men's outdoor track senior
Ehab El-Sandali blazed time of 13:35.93 in the 5,000-meter event at the 2022 Payton Jordan Invitational late Friday night. The mark was a personal best by nearly 14 seconds and the fourth fastest 5k time in program history.
El-Sandali finished 12th overall and sixth among NCAA Division I competitors in the race field. It was the fastest time in the MAAC this season, nearly 12 seconds ahead of teammate
Joshua DeSouza's mark at the Virginia Challenge last weekend. It also stands as the 10th fastest time in the east and No. 33 on the NCAA list this season.
Already a member of Iona's sub-14-minute club, El-Sandali's current best time sits behind
Mitch Goose (13:34.41, 2012),
Richard Kiplagat (13:34.66, 2006) and Leonard Korir (13:35.71, 2011). The next three fastest times include current and former teammates
Jamie Dee (13:46.78, 2021),
Joshua DeSouza (13:47.81, 2022) and Chartt Miller (13:49.60, 2017).
Up next for the Gaels is the 2022 MAAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by Rider University on Saturday and Sunday (May 7-8).
