LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Iona College men's outdoor track team competed on the first day of the 2022 MAAC Championships held at Michael P. Brady Track & Field Complex and hosted by Rider University. The Gaels earned nine points on the day and had 11 student-athletes qualify following successful preliminary round performances.
1500-METER PRELIMINARIES
All six Iona harriers competing in the 1500 qualified for Sunday's final.
Senior
Ehab El-Sandali, sophomore
Matthew Rankin and junior
Jamie Dee set the tone to kick-off the track portion of the championship early Saturday afternoon with a 1-2-3 finish in the first heat. They ran the three fastest times among all heats with El-Sandali clocking a 3:57.85, Rankin a 3:58.80 and Dee right behind in 3:58.90.
Sophomores
Damien Dilcher (3:59.46) and
Jonathan DeSouza (3:59.69) were the top two finishers in heat two with the fifth and sixth fastest prelim times. Sophomore
Joshua DeSouza was the final qualifier, winning the third heat in 4:09.78.
200-METER PRELIMINARIES
Sophomore
Jadyn Tabois continued his stellar spring with the fastest qualifying time in the 200-meter dash. His first-place time in the third heat came in at 21.48. Senior
Kevin Fullerton finished second in the opening heat with the fourth fastest overall time of 21.88 to earn a berth in Sunday's final.
800-METER PRELIMINARIES
Two Gaels earned qualifying times in the 800. Junior
Mael Gouyette finished second in the first heat and earned the second fastest qualifying time with a 1:53.18. Sophomore
Nick Soldevere was the top performer in heat four and posted a 1:55.44, the fourth fastest 800 prelim time.
400-METER PRELIMINARIES
Tabois second qualifying effort came in the 400. He was the top finisher in the second heat in 49.94. It was the sixth fastest time among the 24 performers over four heats.
100-METER PRELIMINARIES
Senior
Prince Forson advanced to Sunday with his 100-meter dash time of 10.48. He was second in the opening heat, posting the third fastest time among the 20 competitors. Fullerton (10.53) also earned a second final qualifying time, finishing behind Forson in the first heat.
10,000-METER FINAL
Iona's nine team points came in the 10k with sophomores
Campbell Lee (30:53.52),
Colin Logsdon (30:57.68) and
Peter Schulten (31:05.56) finishing back-to-back-to-back in fifth, sixth and seventh places.
