NEW ORLEANS, LA - Five members of the Iona University men's cross country team and one member of the women's program were named All-Region for their performances at the 2023 Northeast Regional Championships last Friday at Van Cortlandt Park.
All five scorers on the men's side earned All-Region honors as the Gaels were one of 13 schools among nine regions to earn the distinction. Two schools had all seven competitors and three additional had six of their seven earn top regional honors. Iona was represented on the men's side by junior
Damien Dilcher (2nd, 29:40.1), senior
Joshua DeSouza (3rd, 29:40.8), sophomore
Lachlan Wellington (10th, 29:55.4), junior
Nick Soldevere (11th, 29:57.4) and sophomore
Matt Rankin (14th, 30:00.5).
The Maroon & Gold captured its ninth-ever regional title and first since 2012, upsetting Syracuse Harvard for the top spot in the Northeast. They will compete in the upcoming NCAA Championship hosted by the University of Virginia on Saturday at 11:10 a.m. on ESPNU.
A total of 225 men from 89 different programs and 225 women from 99 different programs earned the distinction of All-Region by virtue of a top-25 finish at one of the nine regional sites this past weekend.
On the women's side sophomore
Holly Smith was named All-Region for her 23rd place performance.
The six Gaels are now eligible to earn USTFCCCA All-Academic honors announced in January.
