Iona Swimming & Diving Puts In Strong Performance On Day Two

Behind the strength of the second gold medal, meet record and NCAA B qualification by Michael Faughnan, and eight strong relays and a collection of individual race efforts, the Iona University Men's and Women's Swimming and Divin Team made a strong push on the leaderboard at the 2023 ECAC Winter Invitational.
 
Faughnan, a senior co-captain after a controlled morning swim that saw him be the second qualifier, roared out to the lead in the first 15 meters to win by over 4 seconds with a meet record time of 1:35.28, just .01 over his MAAC Championship record set in February.
 
The Iona men held on to fourth place in the standings closing the gap on LIU (738 to 694). NJIT and Monmouth, stand 1-2 at 1177 and 836-points.
 
The Iona women climbed from seventh after Day 1 to sixth place. Defending Champion Columbia has a strong lead with1289-points, with Stony Brook (793), Siena (653) LIU (652) Monmouth (601) and Iona (469) in the top 6.
 
The Iona women were sparked by a bronze medal effort in the 800-yard Freestyle relay as Megan Josephs, Anabel Huffstutler, Ela Goucher and Isabella Nicholson combined for a 7:45.81 time. 
 
Finalists in the women's 400-IM included Tristan Urso, eighth (4:39.96); Huffstutler, eleventh (4:38.06); Brennyn Veit, fourteenth (4:43.41); Katherine Sarnes, seventeenth (4:43.49). The men's race had Andrew Diano ninth (4:11.04); Matthew Woyksnar, tenth (4:12,57); Lucas Haddad, thirteenth (4:18.18); Matthew Loftus, fourteenth (4:22,95); James Cash sixteenth (4:26.15).
 
The 100-yard Butterfly had Ashley Benkert place sixth (56.98) with Erin McKinney sixteenth (59.49). The men's race had Noah Gionta take ninth (50.31); Brian Baldwin was twentieth (50.98).
 
The women's 200-Free had Isabella Nicholson take fourteenth (1:56.31) as Kieran Egan claimed fifteenth (1:43.92); Elijah Decasseres, eighteenth (1:43.94); and Robert Heim twenty-fourth (1:46.62), behind Faughnan.
 
The 100-Breast saw Meghan Josephs, Huffstutler, Veit place 13, 16 and 19 respectively at 1:07.21, 1:08.78 and 1:08.76. The men's race had Lucas Haddad take twenty-second at 1:00.91.
 
The 100-Back had Kieran Egan, Nat Wales, Brian Baldwin, Decasseres place 2, 11, 14, 19th respectively with times of 49.43, 51.23, 52.09, and 53.40.
 
Sophomore diver Dylan Ricco took fourth on the 1-M Springboard.
 
Competition concludes Sunday at the Nassau County Aquatic Complex.
