ELKHART, IND - The third and final day of the 2023 National Invitational Championship Meet turned out to be the most productive day for the Iona men's and women's swim team, with another big swim from MAAC MVP
Michael Faughnan and 3 new team records.
Day 3 Summary
Faughnan reached the championship finals in the preliminaries in the 100-yard Freestyle with a 44.55 clocking, lowering his own school mark from 45.26. The Junior co-captain returned in the evening finals to claim 16th place with another school record and personal best time of 44.53.
Two Iona women delivered two school records in the competitive meet time trials. Senior
Julia Moser – in her final Iona race - broke
Katherine Lee's 2022 mark of 59.42 set in the NIC Meet - in the 100-Individual Medley with a 59.05 clocking.
Freshman
Victoria Novinskiy, continued her dominance on the Iona record board, by posting a 2:03.20 time in the 200-yard butterfly, lowering the Iona school record of 2:06.12 set in 2020 by
Isabelle Pabon. The time would have won the event by over two seconds at the MAAC Championship Meet last month.
Then the meet's final event saw
Chase Bateman,
Brian Baldwin,
Mikel Palaj and
Michael Faughnan combine for 32nd place at 3:04.95.
Overall the Iona men ended up with 60-points in the 48 team field, as the Women gained 4-points. The University of Tennessee dominated the women's side with 566-points, 111-points ahead of the University of Akron. The Queens University of Charlotte posted 674-points for the win, 112-points better than Tennessee.
