BOSTON, MA — Junior
Tayla Gunton opened the 2025-26 season in historic fashion, setting a new Iona University women's indoor track & field record in the 5,000 meters as the Gaels' lone competitor at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener.
Gunton clocked 16:00.63, shattering her personal best by 50 seconds and finishing just 0.63 seconds shy of becoming the first woman in program history to break the 16-minute barrier. Her performance erased the previous school record of 16:01.28, set 19 years ago by former Gael standout Salome Kosgei at the FastTrack Invitational. Gunton entered the meet ranked 10th on Iona's all-time list after her performance at last year's MAAC Championship.
