EDISON, NJ - Iona University women's indoor track & field freshman Sofia Lumbreras earned MAAC Runner of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors following a standout performance at the Ramapo Season Opener, the Gaels' first meet of the 2026 calendar year. Lumbreras is the first Iona performer this season to receive a MAAC weekly award, and her Rookie of the Week recognition comes as the conference introduced the honor to indoor track and field for the 2025-26 season.
 
Lumbreras captured first place in the mile run, crossing the line in 4:59.46 to win the race by nearly five seconds. The victory highlighted a strong night for the Gaels at the Armory Track & Field Center and underscored an impressive early season showing in just her second collegiate indoor meet.

UP NEXT

Iona returns to action next Friday and Saturday, Jan. 23-24, when the Gaels compete at the Armory at the Dr. Sander Scorcher, hosted by Columbia University.
