Shelton, CT ? The Iona College women's rowing team competed in the Head of the Connecticut Regatta this morning.
The women's first varsity four of Colleen Ryan, Jen Dolan, Rachel Smith and Veronica Costa coxed by Toni DesSoye raced in the women's DI collegiate event placing 9th out of 13 crews. Given that seven of the eight crews ahead all came from Yale and Northeastern, two programs that compete at a much higher level than Iona traditionally races at, this result is clearly a positive for the development of our up and coming program. Just for the sake of comparison only two non-scholarship programs, Coast Guard and Mt. Holyoke, were able to put out faster fours in the following race, restricted to non-DI programs.
The women's second varsity four of Lisa ONeill, Lauren DiGrazia, Danielle Rubino and Erika Webers coxed by Samantha Garrity, rowing in the same event as their first varsity four teammates, placed 13 out of 13 crews. For the majority of those rowing in the second boat, this was their first experience of competing over the longer head race distance and they were able to gain valuable experience while being exposed to the quality of rowing expected at the varsity collegiate level.
The women's lightweight four of Cara Rahon, Melissa Van Gelder, Abby Carrel-Thomas and Vanessa Hansen coxed by Amanda O'Sullivan placed 3rd of 4 crews in the women's open lightweight event. After a racing error early into the race, costing many valuable seconds, the crew raced hard to the finish line managing to get in front of conference rival Fairfield. The error at the start meant they were unable to put in a serious challenge to University of Massachusetts Amherst, finishing in second place, however all three collegiate boats were outclassed by a particularly strong crew racing for Community Rowing. There is clear potential for quality racing speed to come from the Iona lightweights and they will have all learned a valuable racing lesson which will only make them faster with practice. Additionally the exposure to the quality of the Community Rowing crew will give the Iona team a much more finely tuned perspective on just how fast lightweight rowing can be, and then some.
The women's squad now goes back to training with a round of selection races to finalize the crew that will compete in the upcoming world famous Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston, MA in two weeks time.
