FALL METROPOLITAN REGATTA RECAP

Glen Island, NY - The Iona College women's rowing team rowed in the Fall Metropolitan Regatta on their home course today.

The women's varsity eight of Melissa Van Gelder, Cara Rahon, Colleen Ryan, Jen Dolan, Rachel Smith, Lauren DiGrazia, Veronica Costa, and Abby Carrel-Thomas coxed by Sam Garrity opened the women's events with a very strong performance, finishing second of five. While Fordham A won the race by a convincing 10 second margin, this performance represents the closest margin between these two schools on record. Iona women's powerful performance earned them the right to watch Fordham's second varsity eight cross the line in third place, nine seconds in arrears.

The women's novice four of Lynn Marchiafava, Tara Marsigliano, Mary Buckley and Carolyn Ecke coxed by Michelle Steinberg won their heat and also proved to be the fastest novice four comprised of only walk-on rowers (Sacred Heart posting the fastest time in the event but using three recruits in their freshman boat).

The jv four of Lisa ONeill, Costa, Danielle Rubino and Erika Webers coxed by Amanda O'Sullivan came in second of three behind Fordham, but with their sprint to the line the crew was able to finish a good distance ahead of Sacred Heart. The women's team is beginning to develop some strength in depth, with additional squad members Victoria Paino, Jessica Scotland, Monica Nina, Julianne DeLuca and hopefully Erica Brookman returning in the spring.

The varsity four of Ryan, Dolan, Smith and DiGrazia coxed by Toni Dessoye, were able to put all but Fordham behind them, coming in second of six. Last year Iona was 20 seconds behind Fordham, and this year the gap has been reduced to 10 seconds. The varsity four also got to renew rivalries with NYU.

The lightweight four of Rahon, Van Gelder, Carrel-Thomas and Vanessa Hansen coxed by Garrity placed second of four, with Fordham in first place. After this result, the lightweight women have a clear indication of what work is needed in order for them to bridge the gap between them and their local rivals.
