New Rochelle, NY- The Iona College
baseball team was swept by Marist today in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference
baseball matchup at Salesian Field. The
Red Foxes (10-21, 6-7 MAAC) took the opener 19-6 before completing the sweep in
the night cap, 8-1.
After surrendering two in the top of the first, the Gaels
(9-23, 3-9 MAAC) knotted the score in the bottom of the second with two runs of
their own. Senior 3B Nick Capowski drove in the first run
with an RBI single to left with a runner on first and second. Rookie 2B Mike Walraven also picked up an RBI with a base hit just over the
outstretched glove of the Marist second baseman.
Marist exploded for nine runs (five earned) in the top of
the third to take the commanding lead. Iona added a run in the third, fifth, sixth and seven
innings, but could not hold the Red Foxes offense at bay.
Capowski, sophomore SS Joe
Lorenzo, senior DH Allie Abbatiello,
and rookie LF Andrew Passerelle each
collected two hits a piece for the Gaels.
Capowski had two RBI in the loss.
Marty Hand (3-6)
took the loss. Only four of the 11 runs
allowed were earned as he allowed six hits and struck out three in three
innings of work. Rookie RHP John Kassebaum, tossed the majority of
the contest scattering nine hits over the final six innings.
Marist CF Travis Musolf did a majority of his team's damage
with a 5-for-6 effort, four runs scored and six RBI in the win. He delivered the big blow in the nine-run
third inning with a grand slam home run over the right centerfield fence.
Marist LHP Josh Rickards (3-3) picked up the win.
What began as a pitchers duel between Marist RHP Erik Suplee
and Bobby DiNuzzo with each hurler
allowing just one hit through three innings, turned into a Marist advantage in
the fourth. Marist scored four runs in
the inning and added four more before Iona got
on the scoreboard in the 8-1 defeat.
Rookie Mike Walraven
went 2-for-3 while sophomore RF Keith
Kenny drove in the Gaels lone run.
DiNuzzo (1-4) took the loss. The
Maroon & Gold struggled offensively vs. Suplee (3-1) who scattered six runs
in the win.
The two teams complete the three-game series tomorrow at
Noon at Salesian Field.
