New Rochelle, NY - In conference action today the Iona College softball team took on the Jaspers of Manhattan College in a doubleheader at Pinebrook field. The squad defeated Manhattan in game one 7-3, but fell to them in game two 16-8. Head coach Andrea Farquhar recognized six seniors, Laura Bosso, Lexi Garbowski, Alison Funn, Stacy Moyer, Alex Sprague, and Lauren Spohn, who have played in Maroon and Gold for four years.
The Gaels wasted little time in game one to start the damage, scoring five runs in the first inning of play. Freshman 2B Kaitlin Calogera(2-for-4, 2 runs, 2 RBI) led the game off with a single up the middle, stole second the advanced to third on a wild pitch. Senior LF Stacy Moyer(0-for-2, 1 RBI) then hit a sac fly to right field that scored Calogera. A single by rookie Courtney Christie (1-for-3, 1 run, 1 RBI) brought in Laura Hackimer who was pitch running for senior CF Alex Sprague who reached on a walk. With two men on senior 3B Lexi Garbowski(1-for-3, 1 run, 3 RBI) took the first pitch delivered over the center field fence. The Gaels tacked on two more runs in the second inning with a Calogera double and a sac fly by sophomore 1B Val Laschen(0-for-1, 1 run, 1 RBI).
With seven unanswered runs by the Gaels in six innings played the Jaspers finally got on board in the seventh inning. On a few errors and a homerun by Manhattan RF Kerry Cook , the team tallied three runs.
The Gaels junior RHP Becky Riccitelli picks up another win, pitching a great game, allowing only four hits and three runs to score. The win brings Riccitelli's record to (8-9).
Game two was ended in five innings due to and eight run difference going into the fifth inning. The Jaspers jumped out in front scoring two runs in the first inning, that was answered right back by the Gaels who put two runs up on the board as well. The Jaspers then scored 13 runs in the second inning alone on eight hits by the squad. The Gaels tried to recover tacking on 6 more runs, but the damage was done and in five innings played, the game was over due to the eight run difference rule with a score of 16-8.
Senior RHP Lauren Spohn took the loss for the Gaels which drops her record to (0-6).
The Gaels are back in action on Wed. (May 2) at Pinebrook Field to take on Fairfield in MAAC play at 3:00 pm.
