Syracuse, NY- First place Le Moyne needed runs in its last at bat in both ends of a doubleheader as the Iona College baseball team dropped 3-1 and 3-0 decisions to the Dolphins at Dick Rockwell Field.
Locked in a pitching duel through four, the Gaels struck first in game one plating a run in the fifth inning on freshman 2B Mike Walraven's single down the right field line. It was a short lead though as Dolphin SS Andy Parrino tied the score at 1-1 with a solo shot in the bottom of the frame.
A two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth propelled the home team to a 3-1 win.
Junior RHP Shane Sveda took the hard luck loss in relief. His classmate, RHP Bobby DiNuzzo, allowed five hits in 6.1 innings of loss in the no decision.
Walraven went 2-for-4 with an RBI, junior SS Joe Lorenzo also recorded two hits in four at bats in the loss.
Game two - the scheduled seven inning contest in the three game series - went ten innings before anyone got on the scoreboard. A walk-off three-run home run by Parrino gave Le Moyne the victory.
Junior LHP Kevin Carmody stymied the Dolphins bats through 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits and walking three. Junior RHP Shawn Walsh (2-2) took the loss.
Rookie LF Andrew Passerelle went 2-for-4, acquiring two of Iona's four hits in the contest.
The series and Iona's season concludes tomorrow at noon.
