Whitney Point, NY ? The Iona College women's rowing team presented a very bright showing at the 2007 New York State Rowing Championships, which took place this past weekend in Whitney Point. Every woman that traveled returned with a medal.
The novice boat of Laura Harap, Mary Buckley, Kristin Amore, and Carolyn Ecke coxed by Michelle Steinberg took home a bronze metal for a third place finish.
It was gold for the varsity squad, as the women's varsity lightweight four of Cara Rahon, Melissa Van Gelder, Abby Carrel-Thomas, and Vanessa Hansen coxed by Amanda O'Sullivan won their race easily. For additional competition, the group also raced in the openweight category and finished fourth. That race was won by Iona's varsity four of Colleen Ryan, Jen Dolan, Rachel Smith, and Laruen DiGrazia coxed by Sam Garrity.
The women's pair of Veronica Costa and Tara Marsigliano defeated defending pairs champion Skidmore for the Gaels' third gold of the championships.
The women's rowing season continues with the Dad Vail Regatta, May 11-12 in Philadelphia.
