New Rochelle, NY - Iona College baseball senior RHP
Bobby DiNuzzo tossed a complete-game two hitter and struck out 12 to lead his team to a 3-2 victory in the second game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at Salesian Field. The Gaels used two runs in their last at bat to come out with the win. The Stags took the first game 4-2.
Fairfield scored its two runs in the nightcap in the top of the third inning. Two straight sacrifice attempts by the Stags were misplayed by DiNuzzo and a third error in the inning led to the two tallies.
The Gaels crawled back with a run in the bottom of the sixth before to half their deficit. Junior SS
Joe Lorenzo scored from third on when freshman 1B
Chris Griffin grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.
Fairfield could not record an out in Iona's half of the seventh inning. Freshman CF
Trevor Hybner led off with a hard single off Fairfield LHP Dan Urbanovich's glove. Sophomore 3B
Mike Walraven could not get a bunt down to sacrifice Hybner to second. With a 1-2 count he fouled off two straight pitches before getting hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Senior 2B
Ralph Marzella reached on an infield single when his sacrifice attempt landed just beyond the outstreched glove of Urbanovich, loading the bases with no out. Senior DH
Allie Abbatiello ripped a single up the middle to plate Hybner and push across the tying run. After a pitching change saw Stag RHP sidearmer Dan Gallagher come in, Lorenzo struck an 0-2 pitch over the shortstop to drive in the game winning run.
DiNuzzo (1-6) had arguably his top outing of his Iona career tossing seven innings, allowing just two hits while both runs allowed were unearned. After allowing the two runs, he retired 10 straight hitters before allowing an infield hit in the seventh inning. During the stretch he struck out seven.

Andrew Wernicki had two hits a piece. The Gaels had 12 hits in the win.
The Gaels were stung by three unearned runs in the 4-2 loss in the opener. The Stags scored twice in both the second and third innings to take the 4-0 lead. Iona cut its deficit in half in the bottom of the seventh inning. Sophomore RF
Dylan McCullough singled home two runs to account for his team's tallies.
Lorenzo was the lone Iona player with multiple hits with a 2-for-4 day.

Shane Sveda took the hard luck loss, allowing six hits in a complete-game effort. He struck out seven and allowed just one earned run.
The two teams complete the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at Salesian Field. Game time is slated for 12:00 pm. Be advised that the game time is tentative do to the threat of inclement weather.
