BRONX, NY - Fordham scored all eight of its runs in the fifth and sixth innings in an 8-3 defeat of the Iona College baseball team at in non-conference action Houlihan Park.
The Gaels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Senior 1B Andrew Wernicki drove in junior LF Andrew Passerelle with a one-out sacrifice fly to left field.
Back-to-back doubles to lead off the fourth inning by freshman 2B Chris Burke and Paserelle gave Iona a 2-0 lead.
Junior RHP John Kassebaum looked to be in control of the game early a he retired the firt 11 batters to face him. After back-to-back Fordham hits, he retired the final batter in the fourth inning and remained unblemished on the scoreboard.
In the fifth, a key error led to with two out led to three unearned runs and chased Kassebaum from the game. The Gaels were able to get a run back to tie in the next half inning. Paserelle doubled with one out and scored two batter later on an RBI single by sophomore C Chris Griffin.
Fordham had its big inning in the xith, scoring five runs on five singles with the help of three walks. Junior LHP William Dorsa prevented any further damage by recording the final out in the inning.
Paserelle's two doubles were matched by a double and a single off the bat of rookie RF Matthew Simone. Kassebaum allowed four hits and walked just one in 4.2 innings of work. Dorsa, in his first action since Mar. 6 at Navy, pitched effectively in the final 2.1 innings allowing no runs, three hits and two walks while striking out a batter.
The Gaels return to Salesian Field and to MAAC play this weekend in a three-game series with Saint Peter's beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday (Apr. 25).
