Andrew Ledwith '09 broke a 25-year old Irish record in the 10,000-meter event at the Deseret News 10K road race on Saturday. Ledwith ran a ridiculous 27:34.6 in the event topping the previous mark by more than 12 seconds.
Ledwith topped renowned Irish Olympian John Treacy's Irish 10k record that stood at 27:46 since 1985.
He actually finished second in the race. Ethiopian Alene Reta set a course record with his time of 27:18.7. In an interview with the Deseret News, Ledwith commented on the race.
"It was tough running against Reta; he's very tough. (It) was very hard to pull him back (into sight)," Ledwith said. "I was making some headway in the last mile, and he was in sight, but it was too much. He's strong and a lot older than me and that means a lot when you get on the road."
After training in Oregon for most of the year, the Athboy, Ireland native now resides in Salt Lake City.
At Iona, Ledwith was a two-time All-American. He finished third at the 2008 NCAA Cross Country Championship (a 10k event) and was fifth overall in the 2009 NCAA Outdoor 10k Championship. During his senior campaign in 2009, Ledwith set his collegiate personal best time in the 10k with an IC4A Championship time of 28:45.77.
