NEW ROCHELLE, NY - The men's and women's rowing teams played host to the 56th running of the Spring Metropolitan Championship Regatta on Saturday.
RACE SUMMARY
Iona men and women competed in 11 events and walked away with seven medals, including four gold. On the women's side the frosh/novice four and eight both struck gold. Â
The frosh four lead the race wire to wire to finish 16 seconds ahead of Fordham. Â Rounding out the field was Stony Brook, Bryant, and Manhattan. The margin of victory in the frosh eight was also 16 seconds in a dual race with Bryant.Â
The women's varsity eight won a bronze medal behind fast moving crews from Fordham and Sacred Heart but ahead of rival Manhattan. "Manhattan scored a three second win over us last month so the eight's goal in training over the last four weeks was to be on the other end of that result", said head coach
John Boyd. "They've come a long way this season and should feel proud of the work they've put in this year."
On the men's side it was a sweep of the varsity four and varsity eight that helped secure the men's team points title for the Gaels. The varsity four finished 17 seconds ahead of USMMA and in the varsity eight the Gaels were nearly 17 seconds ahead of runner up Fordham.
