HOPKINTON, NH - The Iona University men's cross country team finished fourth at the 2024 NCAA Northeast Regional Championship held at Hopkinton State Fairgrounds. Junior Matt Rankin and senior Lachlan Wellington earned All-Region honors as they finished third and fourth in the race, respectively. The Gaels will await a potential at-large bid to the NCAA Championship during the selection show on Saturday evening.

THE RUNDOWN / TEAM STANDINGS

The Gaels took firm control of their fourth place standing at the 6k mark of the race and made ground on second place Harvard and third place Cornell but could not overtake their regional rivals. Syracuse finished first with 75 points followed by the Crimson with 97, the Big Red with 106 and then the Gaels with 108 points. Yale finished fifth with 183.

IONA PERFORMERS

Rankin earned All-Region honors for the second straight year, improving on his 14th place finish from a year ago as the third runner to cross the line. He posted a time of 29:56.0. Wellington finished just behind his teammate in 29:56.9. He earned his third straight All-Northeast honor with his best ever finish after finishing 10th in 2023 and ninth in 2022. Should Iona not earn a team at-large bid, both Rankin and Wellington have automatically qualified for the NCAA Championship.
 
Sophomore Aiden Coles was Iona's third finisher in 29th place with a time of 30:44.17. Coles was followed by senior Nick Soldevere who finished in 34th place in 30:49.58. Sophomore Tristan Coles was Iona's fifth scorer, finishing 38th posting a time of 30:58.61. Rookie Bradley Giblin (59th, 31:16.52) and junior Tadhg Donnelly 70th (31:25.37) also competed for the Gaels.
