Iona Women’s Golf Caps Fall Season With UAlbany Great Danes Invitational

DELMAR, NY — The Iona University women's golf team closed out its fall schedule on a high note, securing an 11th-place finish out of 14 teams at the UAlbany Great Danes Invitational, held October 12 & 13 at Normanside Country Club in Delmar, New York. The finish marks the Gaels' best team result of the fall season.

Freshman Maria Luiza Soares once again led the way for Iona, tying for 26th individually after posting rounds of 79 (+7) and 84 (+12). Soares has been a consistent performer throughout the fall and capped her semester with another solid showing on a tough course.

Michaela Fernandez showed resilience and improvement between rounds, bouncing back from an opening-round 86 (+14) to fire a 9-over-par 81 on day two. Leia McKenzie contributed a strong opening round of 80 (+8), followed by an 89 (+17) in round two.

Rounding out Iona's top four was Makenna Paxton, who opened with a steady 83 (+11) before a second-round 93 (+21). Her round one score played a key role in boosting the team's standing after day one.

With the fall season now complete, the Gaels turn their focus to winter training. Iona opens its spring campaign on February 21–22, 2026 at The Hammock in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, hosted at Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club.
