Iona Women's Golf Concludes Play at Sacred Heart Fall Classic

MILFORD, CT – The Iona University women's golf team completed its second tournament of the inaugural season this week, finishing the two-day, 54-hole Sacred Heart Fall Classic in 14th place at the Great River Golf Club. The full lineup for the Gaels consisted of Michaela Fernandez, Maria Luiza Soares, Makenna Paxton, Leia McKenzie, and Cassandra Pinho.

Michaela Fernandez was the Gaels' top performer, achieving an outstanding tie for 17th place overall, the best finish for any Iona golfer this season, Fernandez finished with a total of 237 (+21) after posting rounds of 83-75-79. Her second-round 75 (+3) was the lowest score posted by an Iona player in that round.

Maria Luiza Soares (Malu) also delivered a strong performance, carding the team's lowest single round of the tournament with a final-round 77 (+5) to finish with a total of 244 (+28).

The Gaels showed a positive trend of improvement in their team scoring across the three rounds. The team's round scores were 338 (R1), 331 (R2), and a low of 330 (R3) on the final day of competition. Iona finished ahead of Providence in the 15-team field. The tournament was won by the host, Sacred Heart.

The next event for the Gaels will be the Navy Fall Invitational, scheduled for October 4–5 in Annapolis, MD.
