NEW YORK, NY - The Iona College women's indoor track and field team earned first place finishes in each of the four distance events en route to a fourth place finish at the 2010 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Gaels' distance medley relay squad set a meet record in the event.
Graduate
Anna Holm-Joergensen led off the meet for the Gaels with a first place finish in the 5000-meter run. Joergensen dominated the event, finishing over 36 seconds faster than the next runner to cross the line with her time of 17:16.40. Senior
Samone Brockett (19:23.68) was fifth overall in the 5k.
Graduate
Leonie Smith earned a comfortable two-second win in the mile run, posting a time of 5:00.48. It was her fourth career individual MAAC crown and second on the indoor track.
Sophomore
Heidi Gregson, the reigning Most Outstanding Performer at the meet, defended her 800-meter run crown of a year ago. Her first place time of 2:10.70 was five seconds faster than the second place finisher and nearly four seconds faster than her championship time in 2009. Junior
Kristen Peluso (2:17.72) and freshman
Luci McLoughlin (2:19.23) also earned points for the Gaels in the event, finishing fourth and sixth respectively.
Iona's next individual champion was rookie
Marion Joly-Testault. The Maroon & Gold freshman topped her teammate, senior
Ashling Baker, by nearly six seconds with her time of 9:49.38. Baker won the 3k title as a sophomore in 2008. Her time in this year's race (9:55.16) was 18 seconds faster than the previous performance in the event.
Peluso (1200m), Gregson (400m), Smith (800m) and Joergensen (1600) teamed up to set a new standard in the distance medley relay. The time of 12:03.53 smashed the previous mark of 12:15.04 set by the Gaels in the 2006 event. Iona graduates
Zuri Wilson, Heather Bourgault,
Gina Baker and
Salome Kosgei turned in the winning performance four years ago.
The Gaels are back in action next Friday at the NYU Fastrack Invite at the Armory.
