Dennis Patrick Leonard was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the second round of the June Free Agent Draft in 1972.
As an undergraduate, he pitched for Iona College for three seasons, including the 1971 team which compiled 17 straight victories, finished 19-7, and is generally acknowledged as the best team in Iona’s history. While at Iona, he earned All-Metropolitan honors.
As of his induction, he owned a 136-93 major league record with the Royals and held single season team records in games started, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts.
Before being hampered by injuries which forced him to miss major parts of both the 1982 and 1983 seasons, Leonard was the winningest right-handed pitcher in the major leagues from 1975-82. He is the only pitcher in the history of the Kansas City Royals to achieve a 20-win season more than one time. Leonard won 20 or more games in 1977, 1978 and 1980.
