Mike Angione ’89 was a standout performer on the Iona University baseball team in the 1970’s.

In his three-year career, the left-hander logged 138.2 innings pitched,10 complete game efforts along with three shut outs. Angione struck out 157 batters and posted a career earned run average of 2.02.  Over his career he averaged 10.2 strikeouts per nine innings.

As a rookie, Angione pitched alongside fellow Iona and future Kansas City Royal Hall of Famer Dennis Leonard. During the fall season of his freshman year, he tossed a no hitter against metro area rival St. John’s. He posted a 2.25 ERA during the spring, a mark that still ranks among the program’s best for a single season.

Angione had a standout sophomore campaign with a 4-2 record on the mound for the Maroon & Gold. He led Iona with 47 innings pitched and three complete games during the 1973 season. He struck out 52 batters while surrendering just 15 walks and posted an earned run average of 2.42.

In his final season as a Gael, Angione tossed four complete game efforts with one shut out and posted a 1.44 earned run average in six starts. He recorded 50 innings pitched and registered a team-high 70 strikeouts, an average of nearly 13 strikeouts per nine innings.

Angione was also adept at the plate during his tenure, serving as a designated hitter and pinch hitter. With a career batting average hovering around .340 while hitting three home runs.

After three exceptional seasons, Angione was selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 1974 MLB Draft and signed by super scout Herb Stein who inked such stars as Rod Carew and Frank Viola. Angione’s professional career was cut short due to a shoulder injury, and he attempted comebacks with the Yankees, Mets and Blue Jays.

Angione earned a Bachelor of Science degree in General Business from Iona’s LaPenta School of Business in 1989.
