Ryan Carter ’02 was one of the greatest hockey players in Iona University program history and the most prolific performer during the Gaels’ NCAA Division I era.

Carter was a three-time team captain sharing the duties with two of his classmates as a junior and senior. He appeared in 138 games with 93 goals, 86 assists and 179 points. Carter was the No. 1 all-time goal scorer in program history. In the Division I era, which began his freshman season, Carter was 20 goals ahead of his nearest teammate. His points total rank No. 6 all time and 68 more than the No. 2 D-I performer. The Fort Nelson, British Columbia native ranked No. 11 all-time in assists, 15 more than any other Iona DI hockey player. The goal and point totals were also the most in the five-year history of the MAAC Hockey League.

In the single-season record book Carter’s 33 goals as a freshman in 1998-99 ranks No. 1 all-time at Iona. That season he also recorded the third-most points (63) and 11th most assists (30) in program history. The point and goal total stands as a MAAC Hockey League record. As a sophomore, he scored 24 goals which ranked 14th all-time.

Carter was a four-time All-MAAC First Team selection and prior to even stepping foot on the ice, he was the preseason MAAC Player of the Year in 1998-99. He helped lead the Gaels to a MAAC Hockey League championship final appearance in 2000 and a final four appearance in 2001.
During his senior campaign, he was one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Award, awarded to the top college hockey player.

Carter graduated in 2002 with a degree in Finance from Iona’s LaPenta School of Business.
