Arrigoni Hall of Fame
An integral part of the Iona College Athletic Department for over 34 years, Jim McDermott is one of the most respected basketball coaches and athletic administrators in the country.
Under McDermott’s tutelage for 26 seasons, the Gaels amassed 325 victories against 252 defeats. Included in his tradition packed tenure were two twenty-win seasons, including a career best 22-4 record during the 1949-50 campaign and three visits to the National Catholic Invitational Tournament.
McDermott also served as head coach of the Iona College baseball team between 1947 and 1963, compiling an impressive 60% winning ratio. The Helms Foundation Hall of Fame member also served as Iona’s Director of Athletics from 1952 to 1976. Prior to being named Commissioner of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in 1981, McDermott served as the Assistant to the President for Athletic Affairs and as Advisor to the Athletic Department at Iona.
