Arrigoni Hall of Fame
Ray Hyland ’74 enters the Iona College Goal Club Hall of Fame as one of the top scorers and rebounders in the history of the men’s basketball program.
A three-year standout for the Gaels, Hyland averaged 16.0 points and 13.2 rebounds per game during his career. He appeared in 69 career games for the Gaels, becoming the sixth Iona player to surpass the 1,000 point mark, totaling 1,105 career points.
He led the team in field goal percentage in all three years he played and, at the time of his induction, ranks 21st among the all-time Gael scoring leaders. His 910 career rebounds tie him for fifth all-time on Iona’s career list.
He connected on better than 51% of his career field goal attempts. During the 1971-72 campaign, he led the squad in rebounding, posting a career-high 15.2 rebounds per game average-the third highest season average in Iona history. His 350 rebounds that season also ranks as the fourth highest single-season total. That same season, Hyland also scored a career-high 34 points in a win over Army, February 9.
During the 1972-73 season, Hyland again led Iona in rebounding, averaging 12.2 boards per game and led the Gaels in scoring during the 1973-74 campaign, pouring in 18.9 points per contest.
